Planners approve way to improve West Tampa

By Times Staff Writer

WEST TAMPA - Planners have approved an economic development guide for improving West Tampa.

Among other things, the proposal would protect the development pattern outlined in the West Tampa Overlay District, maintain a diversity of housing stock in terms of affordability and design, protect historic structures, and support businesses and industries that take advantage of West Tampa's diverse labor force.

The Hillsborough County City-County Planning Commission unanimously approved the plan June 13. It goes to the Tampa City Council for consideration at 10 a.m. July 28 at City Hall, 315 E Kennedy Blvd.

The plan was developed by the Planning Commission, city officials and the West Tampa Community Development Corp. with the help of questionnaires, community meetings, focus groups and interviews with individuals and business operators.

Work on the plan began in October 2004. It covers an area bound by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard on the north, Himes Avenue on the west, Kennedy Boulevard on the south and the Hillsborough River on the east.

This summer, the community will explore setting priorities and creating a timeline for making changes.
