TALLAHASSEE - Gov. Jeb Bush vetoed a bill Thursday that would have charged students more to take credits beyond what they need to earn a degree at a state university or community college.
The measure (SB 2236) would have required students to pay a surcharge for credit hours that exceed 120 percent of the hours needed for a degree.
Bush said the provision shouldn't apply to community college students, many of whom are economically disadvantaged.
"I am not willing to take this risk and potentially jeopardize the dreams of thousands of individuals seeking a higher education through our community college system," Bush wrote.
Bush also vetoed a bill (SB 2264) to determine when a student who moves to Florida would qualify as a resident for in-state tuition at state universities and community colleges, saying the changes weren't clear and fair.
