Pull up an umbrella and dive in

Well, either a lot of people are short on cash or there's something about the chemistry of sea and sand that ferments memory into dreams, dreams into stories.

Our Summer Essay Contest, in which we asked readers to recall a beach experience in just 300 words, brought more than 700 entries, a total of 210,000 words, the equivalent of about four anthologies.

Because of our required reportage of ax murders and celebrity canoodlings, we can't print all the essays, even all the beautifully told, sad, sweet, funny ones. We're going to start today with our five favorite favorites, then publish some other beauties, one at a time, in Floridian through July 4. Good reading.
