Woman dead, gunman shot
in TIA parking garage

TAMPA - A man shot and killed a Port Charlotte woman in the Tampa International Airport parking garage and was then shot by airport police this morning, police said.

The shooting occurred during a domestic dispute, Tampa police spokesman Joe Durkin said. Airport police began searching the parking garage after two calls reporting an argument between the man and Lori Nielsen, 38. One of the callers said the man had a gun, Durkin said.

When three airport police officers arrived on the seventh level of the garage, they saw the man shoot Nielsen. They ordered the man to drop the gun, but he turned and fired a shot at the police. Durkin said the officers then fired at the man, striking him at least three times.

Nielsen died at the scene of a single gunshot wound, Durkin said. The man was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital.

Nielsen was returning to her car after dropping her three children off at the airport. Durkin said. They were traveling to see their father in Connecticut. The suspect was a current or former boyfriend, Durkin said. Police are unsure of why he confronted Nielsen at the garage.

Police did not release the suspect's name.
