IF YOU ARE setting off your own fireworks this Independence Day, follow these safety tips from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission:

- Children should never be allowed to play with fireworks and should be supervised when playing with sparklers.

- Fireworks should be lit only on flat surfaces away from houses, flammable materials and dry leaves.

- All warning and instructions should be read and followed.

- If a firework does not go off, don't try to relight it.

- Always keep a bucket of water nearby in case of fire or malfunction.
