Company says tax letter was sent in error

Cranbrook Mortgage Corp. says letters about late property taxes went to the wrong addresses.

TAMPA - A Michigan-based company that sent 1,000 letters to Hillsborough County property owners urging them to refinance their homes to pay late property taxes said Monday the whole thing was a mistake.

Last week more than 150 property owners flooded the phone lines of the Hillsborough County Tax Collector's Office, wanting to know why they received tax lien notification letters from Cranbrook Mortgage Corp.

The letters, according to a statement from Cranbrook executives, were solely intended for residents who have not paid their taxes, offering means to refinance their mortgage so they can free money to pay their tax bill.

The company made a mistake, however, while cross-referencing the "paid" and "unpaid" categories of Hillsborough property tax records, the company said. "There will be an apology letter distributed to each Hillsborough County resident who received the tax lien letter in error," the company said.
