King grad Reid among five released by Bucs

TAMPA - The Bucs waived five players Monday, including one from the area.
King High graduate Fred Reid, a running back, was let go along with cornerback Carlos Campbell, linebacker Richard Glover, tackle Matt Martin and cornerback Dominique Morris, the Web site buccaneers.com reported.
Reid, of Mississippi State, was the Times' All-Suncoast player of the year in 1999.
Only Martin has NFL experience. He was with the Titans in 2002 and spent most of 2003 on Tennessee's active roster. The other four were free agents signed out of college.
Morris, of Vanderbilt, and Reid were rookies signed after the draft April 25. Campbell, of Notre Dame, was one of four players Tampa Bay kept after rookie camp. Glover, of New Mexico State, also emerged from the camp but wasn't signed until June 3.
The Bucs have 97 players; they must trim the roster to 90 by the start of training camp on July 28.
TWO RETIRE AS JETS: The Jets signed former linebackers Mo Lewis and Marvin Jones so they can retire as members of the team.
Lewis and Jones were released in March 2004 and never signed with another team. They officially will retire today and will be honored at a home game during the upcoming season.
"The Jets are proud that Mo and Marvin are retiring as New York Jets," general manager Terry Bradway said. "It's rare today to have one player play his entire career with one team, and in this instance, the Jets have two and it's a tribute to both gentlemen."
Jones, the fourth overall pick in the 1993 draft out of Florida State, played 142 games in his 11 seasons and ranks third in team history with 1,200 tackles. In 1992, his final season at FSU, Jones won the Butkus Award as the nation's best linebacker and the Lombardi Award as the nation's best lineman.
Lewis was the Jets' third-round draft choice in 1991, and served as defensive captain from 1997 until his final season in 2003.
RAIDERS: Oakland signed defensive tackle Ed Jasper, who was released in February by the Falcons. He became a starter last season and played in the first 12 games before missing four with a hand injury.
SAINTS: Louisiana will again borrow the cash needed to make its annual payment to the team, Web site theredzone.com reported, though it's unclear how the loan will be repaid or how the state will meet future obligations to the team. The state has yet to repay the cash it borrowed from an economic development fund last year to make its payment. This time, the state will borrow $10.5-million. The State Bond Commission approved the plan.
