Baby placed face down improves; mother in jail

PORT RICHEY - An infant has been released from the hospital and is recovering in foster care, Pasco sheriff's deputies said Monday, less than a week after his 20-year-old mother was arrested and charged with aggravated child abuse.

The 6-week-old boy had been found not breathing after Pasco sheriff's deputies say his mother intentionally put him face down in his crib.

Lucia Estelle Gamez, who still was held Tuesday in county jail in lieu of $150,000 bail, told deputies she intentionally put her son face down in his crib to "shut him up," reports said.

Deputies said it appeared someone had tried to suffocate the baby.

Gamez said she realized she could possibly kill her baby by laying him face down, deputies reported.

Gamez's was the third baby in Pasco County this month to have been hospitalized before its parent was charged with aggravated child abuse.
