TAMPA - A 23-year-old man remained in jail without bail Wednesday after sheriff's officials say he fired a gun at his 16-year-old girlfriend during an argument earlier this week.

Michael James Hartman of 5205 Dublin Place has been charged with attempted felony murder.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said Hartman and Kristina Kimball, his girlfriend, got into an argument Monday at Kimball's home at 17313 Simmons Road in Lutz. The couple was outside, Carter said, and Kimball began walking into the house when Hartman fired one round at her.

The bullet missed Kimball, but hit a vacant house next door, Carter said. Hartman then left, and Kimball called deputies to report the shooting. The Sheriff's Office arrested Hartman at his home just before 10:30 p.m.

Fronczak trial should begin today after delay

LARGO - Opening statements in the trial of Mark Fronczak, the Southern Oak Elementary School music teacher charged with sexually abusing two students, was delayed Wednesday because one of the attorneys in the case was ill.

Fronczak, 50, faces charges of sexual battery and lewd or lascivious molestation, charges that could bring a life sentence if he is convicted. The trial is expected to begin this morning.
