ST. LEO - Four years ago, the Goizueta Foundation gave a half million dollars to Saint Leo University.
On Thursday, it doubled the amount.
Now, the $1-million endowment is earmarked to help recruit Hispanic students and offer scholarships, peer-mentoring and leadership.
With the first gift, Saint Leo University launched the Goizueta Foundation Scholars Program.
It bears the name of former Coca-Cola chief executive Roberto Goizueta, who was born in Cuba and died in 1997. But his foundation still thrives.
The Georgia group offers money to charitable organizations and educational institutions "that empower individuals and families through educational opportunities," according to the group's Web site, www.goizuetafoundation.org
"Our work and mission are blessed and affirmed by the generosity of the Goizueta Foundation," university president Arthur F. Kirk Jr. said in a news release. "We will work very hard to be responsible stewards of this important gift and the generations of Latino students who will benefit from it for years to come."
At Saint Leo University, there are five existing Goizueta Foundation scholars. Soon, five new freshmen will join the fold. Then current scholars will serve as mentors to the new recipients.
