F1 out to make amends in France

MAGNY COURS, France - Formula One will try to forget the tire debacle at the United States Grand Prix when it returns to Europe this weekend.
The French Grand Prix marks the series' midway point, and seven-time champ Michael Schumacher is finally rounding into shape after making up 18 points on leader Fernando Alonso during two races in North America.
That is, if you consider what happened at the U.S. Grand Prix a race.
"The fact is that one tire company had a problem and therefore the cars couldn't race," Schumacher said Thursday.
Ferrari's Schumacher was one of only six drivers who raced at Indianapolis on June 19 - all on Bridgestone tires - while his rivals on Michelin sat out the race.
"After Indianapolis, Formula One needs a proper race in France and we will be focused to deliver," said Mercedes-McLaren head Norbert Haug, whose team boycotted the race.
IRL: All Buddy Rice needs to do to upgrade his season is lead a lap Sunday at Kansas Speedway.
He came to Kansas City, Kan., in 2004 riding the buzz that comes with winning the Indianapolis 500, then held off teammate Vitor Meira in the second-closest finish in Indy Racing League history.
He is yet to lead a lap in 2005.
"I think we need to finish in the top three, and that will be solid," Rice said. "Once we get that to happen, everything will start coming together."
ROLEX SERIES: Butch Leitzinger passed Michael McDowell on 47th of 70 laps and won a Grand American sports car race at Daytona Beach. Leitzinger finished 5.539 seconds ahead of Max Angelelli, who won the 24-hour race earlier this year at Daytona International Speedway.
