Times drops Fletcher as featured forecaster

The St. Petersburg Times has dropped WTSP meteorologist Dick Fletcher as its featured forecaster on its daily weather page.
The Times began featuring Fletcher, the veteran Channel 10 weatherman, in 2001 as part of a marketing partnership with the station. In return for using Fletcher's forecasts, the paper received promotions of upcoming newspaper stories on the station's 11 p.m. newscast.
Executive editor Neil Brown said the station's irregular promotion of Times stories "led us to conclude that we weren't getting enough value in return" for giving Fletcher such prominence in the newspaper.
For now the paper will use forecasts from Weather Central, a national meteorological service that provides weather reports to news outlets throughout the country.
"It's an excellent service and will allow us to contemplate the best way, in print and on the Web, to give our readers the weather information they need," Brown said.
Meanwhile, the paper will continue its partnership with WTSP on other stories and projects, Brown said.
