Palm Harbor man gets year in jail after struggle with neighbor

By Times Staff Writer
Published July 7, 2005

A Palm Harbor man arrested Dec. 30 after deputies said a gun he was carrying went off during a fight with a neighbor has pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and felony battery.

Marc Ament, 39, was sentenced June 29 to a year in jail and five years' probation, according to court records. Pinellas County sheriff's deputies initially charged Ament with attempted murder, but prosecutors later reduced the charge. Deputies said Ament pulled a .38-caliber handgun from under his sweater during a fight with neighbor Craig A. Grippe in the Reserve at Lake Tarpon in the Highland Lakes area of Palm Harbor. The confrontation began after Ament drove by as some teenage girls were painting T-shirts for a party in Grippe's driveway, authorities said. During the struggle, the gun went off and a bullet hit the ground. As part of his sentence, Ament was ordered to stay away from Grippe and his family.
