Red Tide has moved into Tampa Bay as far north as the Gandy Bridge. For now, areas in the upper bay appear untouched by the toxic algae bloom.
On a recent trip, we spotted many different species of dead fish. Among the floaters were several 400-plus pound Goliath grouper.
Despite Red Tide in the southern part of the bay, areas north are holding many redfish. Oyster mounds flooded at high tide are a great place to find reds. Use live shrimp or greenbacks under a float for good results. Look for areas that have mullet activity, usually a good sign of redfish.
Spanish mackerel have stayed longer this year despite high water temperatures. They have been feeding during the incoming tide and stop when the tide starts to turn. For eating purposes, ice them thoroughly and eat fresh. If they are frozen, make sure they are completely immersed in water in the storage bag or bin.
For anglers seeking shade, pompano and black drum can be found around area bridges. Fiddler crabs fished on the bottom usually work well. You can also use jigs designed for pompano.
