Pasco makes plans for storm

NEW PORT RICHEY - Pasco County officials are making plans in case Hurricane Dennis veers this way, but they remained hopeful at an 11 a.m. briefing Friday that the storm would largely spare the area.

There are no plans at this point to open shelters or order evacuations, but that could change if the forecast does, said Jim Johnston, Pasco's emergency management coordinator.

"As long as the storm holds its track, we may be alright," Johnston told officials gathered at the Emergency Operations Center in New Port Richey.

For now, potential flooding is the top concern. If Dennis brushes past Pasco County, the outer rain bands could dump 3-5 inches on an already saturated community, Johnston said.

Pasco County will make sand and sandbags available 24 hours a day starting at 5 p.m. Friday at the following locations:

  • Fire Station No. 10, 7912 Rhodes Road, Hudson.

  • Fire Station No. 16, 34336 Chancey Road, Zephyrhills.

  • Fire Station No. 17, 4251 Seven Springs Blvd., New Port Richey.

Fire Station No. 24, 14317 4th St., Dade City.

  • Zephyrhills Fire Department, 38410 6th Ave., Zephyrhills.

  • West Pasco Government Center, 7530 Little Road, New Port Richey.

  • Veterans Memorial Park, 14333 Hicks Road, Hudson.

  • Land O'Lakes Recreation Complex, 3032 Collier Parkway, Land O'Lakes.

The City of Port Richey will provide sand bags only at the police department, 7826 Grand Blvd.; and sand only at the city water plant, 6337 Ridge Road.

The county's Resident Information Center can be reached at (727) 847-8959.
