In an emergency meeting at 3 p.m. today, Pinellas County commissioners recommended that mobile home residents and those living in low-lying coastal areas evacuate in advance of Hurricane Dennis. The non-mandatory evacuation order is effective 6 a.m. Saturday.
Current forecasts have Dennis bringing tropical storm force winds just off the Pinellas coast by Saturday evening. County emergency management officials cautioned that a slight shift in the storm's path could bring stronger, perhaps gale force, winds.
Nine shelters are to be opened at 6 a.m. Saturday. They are:
Palm Harbor University High School, 1900 Omaha Street in Palm Harbor
Safety Harbor Middle School, 125 7th St. North in Safety Harbor
Largo High School, 410 Missouri Ave. in Largo
Pinellas Park High School, 6305 118th Ave. N. in St. Petersburg
Meadowlawn Middle School, 6050 16th St. N. in St. Petersburg.
Shelters set aside for those with special medical needs are located:
Dunedin Highlands Middle School, 70 Patricia Ave. in Dunedin
Seminole Middle School 8701 131st St. N in Seminole
John Hopkins Middle School, 701 16th St. S in St. Petersburg.
