Pinellas recommends mobile home evacuations

The non-mandatory order takes effect at 6 a.m. Saturday.

In an emergency meeting at 3 p.m. today, Pinellas County commissioners recommended that mobile home residents and those living in low-lying coastal areas evacuate in advance of Hurricane Dennis. The non-mandatory evacuation order is effective 6 a.m. Saturday.

Current forecasts have Dennis bringing tropical storm force winds just off the Pinellas coast by Saturday evening. County emergency management officials cautioned that a slight shift in the storm's path could bring stronger, perhaps gale force, winds.

Nine shelters are to be opened at 6 a.m. Saturday. They are:

  • Palm Harbor University High School, 1900 Omaha Street in Palm Harbor

  • Safety Harbor Middle School, 125 7th St. North in Safety Harbor

  • Largo High School, 410 Missouri Ave. in Largo

  • Pinellas Park High School, 6305 118th Ave. N. in St. Petersburg

  • Meadowlawn Middle School, 6050 16th St. N. in St. Petersburg.

Shelters set aside for those with special medical needs are located:

  • Dunedin Highlands Middle School, 70 Patricia Ave. in Dunedin

  • Seminole Middle School 8701 131st St. N in Seminole

  • John Hopkins Middle School, 701 16th St. S in St. Petersburg.
