  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Fans' dismay prompts Live 8 encores

By wire services
Published July 9, 2005

After taking a pounding from viewers and critics over their July 2 broadcasts of the Live 8 concerts, MTV and VH1 today will rerun 10 hours of coverage. VH1 will carry the first five hours from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; MTV will carry the second leg from 3 to 8 p.m.

Viewers who hoped to see their favorite bands performing live to raise awareness of African poverty instead saw mostly taped performances (many of which were cut short), repetitious celebrity interviews and tons of commercials.

"In the wake of our coverage, our viewers have resoundingly told us online they want to see full performances from their favorite artists," MTV Networks Music Group president Van Toffler said.

Both MTV and VH1 will air performances by U2, Pink Floyd, Orchestra Baobab, Coldplay and Paul McCartney. MTV's coverage will also include performances by Linkin Park, Jay-Z, the Killers, Kanye West and Green Day. VH1's coverage will add Rob Thomas, Dave Matthews Band, Sting and Maroon 5 to the mix. Viewers can also expect to see performances by Destiny's Child, Madonna, Dido, R.E.M., Shakira, Snoop Dogg, Good Charlotte, Audioslave, Mariah Carey, Robbie Williams and the Who, among others.

Bay News 9 anchor moving to radio

Bay News 9 afternoon anchor Jenny Dean is preparing to devote more time to radio, moving into a spot on the team building around the anticipated debut of country DJ Skip Mahaffey on Clear Channel's WTBT-FM 103.5.

Elliott Wiser, Bay News 9 vice president and general manager, on Friday said Dean will turn over her weekday afternoon anchor spot this summer to weekend anchor Leigh Moody while transitioning to a morning drive radio news and commentary slot on Mahaffey's morning show.

Dan DiLoreto, Clear Channel regional vice president for radio, said Dean is expected to move to radio full-time starting Sept. 12. Mahaffey's non-compete contract with rival country station WQYK-FM 99.5 runs out in October and he's expected to complete the "U.S. 103.5" morning team Oct. 13.

Wiser said Dean will remain available for spot duty on Bay News 9; and remains affiliated with the TV news team. He said her move to Clear Channel is another facet of the two companies' growing relationship in the Tampa Bay area.
