Lacoochee man arrested in carjacking incident

By Times Staff Writer

DADE CITY - A 19-year-old Lacoochee man was arrested in connection with a carjacking about 4:50 p.m. Thursday, police say - little more than an hour after the victim reported the crime.

The crime happened Wednesday, according to a Dade City police report, when Terrence Smith pulled Allison Hawkins from her tan 2003 Ford Focus, got inside and drove away. But she waited until 3:36 p.m. Thursday to report it to a police officer at Eighth Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. When officers found Smith soon afterward, the report said, he was driving the car, then ran away. He was caught after a brief foot chase, the report said, and a small bag of marijuana was found on him. Smith, 20714 Old Trilby Road in Lacoochee, was charged with carjacking and possession of marijuana but was not in the county jail Friday.
