ST. PETERSBURG - Dee Staats, the wife of Devil Rays television broadcaster Dewayne Staats, died Friday night at a Clearwater hospital after a long battle with cancer. She was 52.
"What a terrible thing," manager Lou Piniella said. "You really feel for Dewayne and his family."
Visitation is scheduled for 6-8 p.m. Monday at the Curlew Hills Funeral Home, 1750 Curlew Road, Palm Harbor. Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 409 Old Coachman Road, Clearwater.
The family asks flowers and donations be sent to the church.
Mrs. Staats is survived by her husband; two daughters, Stephanie and Alexandra; and a grandson, Gabriel.
Before Friday's game, the Rays held a moment of silence.
This is the third death in the Rays family this season. Piniella's father and MLB.com beat writer Paul C. Smith died during spring training.
