Storm causes flooding in Tampa area

By TIMES STAFF
Published July 10, 2005

Scattered flooding occurred throughout the Tampa Bay area early Sunday as storm bands from Hurricane Dennis produced waves of heavy showers.

Water was hip-high in some areas of Madeira Beach, which was pounded by waves from both the Gulf of Mexico and the Intercoastal Waterway.

In Tampa, parts of Bayshore Boulevard were flooded, forcing traffic to be rerouted. At the University of Tampa, the Hillsborough River overflowed its bank and flooded a nearby park.

The severe weather also brought the potential for tornadoes. A watch was in effect for much of the area on Sunday morning, and a warning was posted shortly after 8 p.m. in Pinellas County.

Doppler radar indicated a potential tornado at 8:07 near Largo.

The radar tracked the cell to Clearwater and later Dunedin, but no damage was reported and it was not clear if a tornado ever developed or touched down, the National Weather Service said.
