The strong southerly winds from the back side of Hurricane Dennis should reduce Red Tide to a more tolerable level. The Red Tide organism is always in our waters, but its accumulation and the resulting intensity has been unbearable lately. Its effects could be felt as far out as 12 miles. Giant gag grouper could be seen floating belly up in great numbers west of Clearwater in 40 feet of water.

Another plus from such an intense hurricane is the flushing of the bays. Pesticides, fertilizers and road grime in rain runoff often settle on the bottom of our bays. Strong rip currents caused by the hurricane will disperse these toxins, often reviving a once flourishing area. This is by no means a cure-all for the pollution we create, but Mother Nature's way of flushing does help.
