Crews break water main in downtown Clearwater

By AARON SHAROCKMAN
Published July 12, 2005

CLEARWATER - Contractors digging up the intersection of Myrtle Avenue and Cleveland Street struck and broke a 12-inch water main, lowering water pressure to homes and businesses in a half-mile radius of the downtown intersection for about an hour Tuesday morning.

Three buildings, including the Pierce 100 condominiums, received boil water advisories following the mishap, city utilities officials say. The U.S. Post Office on Cleveland Street and Trickels Jewelers at the northwest corner of Cleveland and Myrtle were also affected. Water division superintendent Lou Badami said the boil water notice should last at those locations for 48 hours while crews repair the broken main and test the water.

No customers lost water during the break, which occurred around 10 a.m., said Glenn Daniel, a utility coordinator with the city. But many downtown buildings, including Morton Plant Hospital, the Pinellas County Courthouse complex and City Hall, experienced dips in water pressure, Daniel said.

Beth Hardy, a Morton Plant spokesperson, said patient care was not affected. Full, normal service was restored in about an hour, Daniel said.
