Shuttle prepares to return to space

By CURTIS KRUEGER
Published July 12, 2005

The space shuttle Discovery is scheduled to launch from Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral at 3:51 p.m. Wednesday, marking the first shuttle launch since Columbia disintegrated in an accident in February 2003. If skies are clear, Tampa Bay residents may be able to see Discovery, and its vapor trail, as the spacecraft streaks through the atmosphere. To do so, turn on a television or radio to confirm that the launch has occurred, and then look in the sky in an easterly direction a few seconds later. It's possible to get a closer look by driving to the Titusville area, but expect plenty of traffic. One popular viewing location is along U.S. 1 in Titusville. National Aeronautics and Space Administration officials said Monday there was a 30 percent chance of bad weather that could delay the shuttle's launch until Thursday or later.
