BROOKSVILLE - Pinching pennies took on a whole different meaning on Tuesday when a 28-year-old man tried to buy a candy bar at the Wal-Mart Supercenter in Brooksville.
The Brooksville Police Department said Corey Valade, a landscaper who lives at 14373 Diablo Drive, west of Brooksville, walked into the Wal-Mart on Broad Street and passed the cashier a bundle of pennies to pay for a candy bar.
But as the cashier began counting the pennies, Valade apparently had a little more than a sweet tooth. According to the police report, he reached into the open cash register, grabbed a $50 bill and ran for the door.
After the cashier yelled to another store employee to stop him, the woman stood in front of Valade with her arms out, indicating that she wanted him to stop. But Valade pushed the woman and struck her arm, the report said.
Valade then ran from the store, dropping his driver's license, according to the report.
Investigators found Valade on White Way and Shadow Drive in Brooksville shortly after 1 p.m. and he was taken into custody. His acquaintances told authorities that Valade had planned to rob the Wal-Mart.
Valade was charged with robbery. He was being held Wednesday at the Hernando County Jail in lieu of $5,000 bail.
