TAMPA - Tampa International Airport police are investigating the apparent suicide of a 33-year-old Elmira, N.Y., man who fell to his death on airport shuttle tracks this week.

Michael E. Wandell had just gotten off an arriving flight Monday about 7 p.m., airport spokeswoman Brenda Geoghagan said. Witnesses said they saw Wandell open an emergency exit door to gain access to a walkway parallel to shuttle rails.

Geoghagan said tram passengers reported seeing Wandell jump.

Guardrails at least 4-feet high line the walkway, she said, and there are signs that warn of high voltage. Wandell was struck by one of the red automated shuttles.
