CLEARWATER - Tom Milton finished second in the all events scratch competition of the 71st annual Florida State Tournament.
Milton, the AMF Kenneth City manager, was 10 points behind Titusville's Jason Hurd, whose 2,189 mark won the division in the recent tournament at Countryside Lanes and AMF Clearwater.
Milton was the only area bowler to place in the top 10 of the singles categories.
Team Gator Skins of Tampa posted a victory with 3,627 pins handicapped.
Marti's Bail Bonds of St. Petersburg placed sixth but won the scratch division. Gator Skins took fourth in scratch play, and Cruise One-Citrus Park of Tampa was 10th.
Robert Dufour and Mike Dukie of Palm Harbor rolled 1,493 in doubles handicapped for third place.
FRIDAY NIGHT MIX: Barry Marvel logged 299 in the event at Countryside Lanes last Friday.
In his next game, Marvel produced a 300 performance en route to an 847 series.
PBA QUALIFIER: Liberty Lanes in Largo will be playing host to a non-member qualifying tournament at 1 p.m. on July 24. The registration fee is $50, and the tourney is open to anyone who's not a PBA member and hasn't been since January 31, 2005.
Each competitor will bowl six games in a scratch format on a PBA 12-lane pattern. One out of every six entrants will receive a paid entry into the Miller Lite St. Petersburg Open, scheduled for Aug. 19 at Liberty. The center is accepting entries for the qualifier and Pro-Am. SCOTCH DOUBLES: Southland Lanes in Pinellas Park is having an adult/youth tournament at 1 p.m. on July 31. The entry fee is $20 per team. Winners will receive a free bowling ball and other prizes. Call (727) 545-0943 for information.
WEEKLY HIGH SCORERS: At Liberty, Bob Smolka, Donald Nelson and Mike Russ each recorded 279 last week. Smolka had a 767 high series. Jason Manny threw a 278.
In the center's youth league, Kiel Goldych rolled a series-high 637 and Mike Saade carded a game-high 264 on his way to a 604 series.
At Sunrise Lanes in St. Petersburg, Jim Dipple enjoyed a 300 and 279 for a 728 series.
Tom Olden fired a 289 and finished with a series-high 800. Jay Mortenson bowled 298, Mike Piacenza recorded a 290 and Maureen Gula knocked down 589 pins with the help of a 224 game.
Larry Schroeder led all youth competitors with a 219 outing.
At Southland, Steve Rossette and Dwayne Smith each delivered a perfect game en route to 785 and 696 series, respectively.
Judy Allen and Edna Barry led the women, with each completing a 706 series.
