Staff from the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge counted 83 manatees Wednesday in an extended summer aerial survey of waters stretching from the Suwannee River to the Weeki Wachee River.

Those totals included 40 manatees in Kings Bay, eight in the Crystal River, four in the Salt River, two in the Homosassa Blue Waters, two in the lower Homosassa River, nine in the Chassahowitzka River, 17 in the Weeki Wachee River and one in the Waccasassa River. The agency conducts aerial surveys throughout the year to keep track of manatee populations and where they congregate.
