For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.
Left-hander Chris Jones , who has pitched sparingly this summer in American Legion play, will test his arm when the Colt World Series begins this week in Miami.
"I had an MRI done and there were no injuries," the 16-year-old Gaither junior said. "The doctor told me I needed to rest it and that's what I've been doing while playing rightfield."
In 2004, Jones threw a complete game in beating Puerto Rico Canovanas 11-2 for the Colt World Series Championship.
Depending on how well Jones' Wellswood team does this week, there may be a return trip to state at Miami before the national championship tournament begins Aug.3 in Lafayette, Ind., concluding with the title game on Aug.10.
POP WARNER: The Hillsborough coaching staff conducted a training session for more than 300 Pop Warner Youth Football League coaches and officials this past weekend.
"This is the fourth year that we've done this and we were very glad to participate," Terriers coach Earl Garcia said.
The training is necessary for certification purposes for anyone aspiring to be a cheerleading or football coach in the program.
"We have some of our players come in and we go over those areas we think will aid these folks in their work. Pop Warner is a wonderful program and has done so much for young people all over our country," Garcia said.
SWEET MEMORY: After receiving the Saladino Award as the best baseball player in Hillsborough County, Gaither pitcher Caleb Graham reflected on his biggest thrill thus far in his baseball career.
"It has to be the final out of our state semifinal game (against Cape Coral Mariner) this year," the Florida State-bound Graham said. "Our goal at the beginning of the year was to get all the way to the state final. I was up 1-2 in the count, a two-run lead, and nobody on with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.
"I threw the batter a slider and as soon as he hit it up in the air toward centerfield, I knew Mario Duarte was going to catch it and that our team and our coaches were going to achieve our goal. That was the greatest feeling in the world." Gaither won 7-6.
