  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Teacher's advice was thoughtful, not racist

Letters to the Editor
Published July 20, 2005

Re: Teacher trying to salvage her name, July 17 Times.

Oftentimes, people make comments that are perceived as racist, but that does not mean the person is racist. Springstead High School teacher Deborah St. John's lesson recommendation is similar to a recommendation I made to my brother some years ago.

My recommendation was based on my background as a student who graduated from predominantly black schools and took classes at predominantly white universities in Florida. I found that instructors at larger schools have very little contact with their students. I also found that students who study can attend any school and do well in life.

Based on my experiences and those of my brother, Ms. St. John made a very sound recommendation. Ms. St. John's recommendation seems to be one based more on concern than racism.

By the way, my brother graduated from Florida State University, but he has some regrets about not considering a black school.

Request for more deputies deserves consideration

Re: Sheriff cites boost in calls, wants 14 more deputies, July 15 Times.

A community such as Hernando that has grown by leaps and bounds must have adequate protection for its residents. In retrospect, there must be some feeling of safety within this county if such large numbers of people want to reside here. If Sheriff Richard Nugent feels this community requires additional manpower, the county Office of Management and Budget should receive this proposal with due diligence and respect for the constituents in Hernando County.

This proposal for increased manpower provides needed safety not only for residents but also for the deputies who serve the community. Everyone should be proud of Sheriff Richard Nugent and the fine men and women of the Hernando County Sheriff's Office. They put their lives on the line every day for our well-being, safety and peace of mind. God bless them.
