Police seek tips on con men preying on elderly

By Times Staff Writer
Published July 20, 2005

St. Petersburg police are looking for two men who have been preying on elderly residents in St. Petersburg, other parts of Pinellas County and Tampa.

The men have gotten into homes by pretending to be city employees or plumbers sent to inspect water pipes. Police say at one home, the men pretended to be Progress Energy workers inspecting the yard for placement of utility poles.

The men have struck 10 times, stealing money and other items.

One is described as white, 6 feet tall, about 155 pounds and in his 20s. The other is white, in his 30s, 5 feet 10 inches tall, and 160 pounds.

Police spokesman George Kajtsa said people should be suspicious of anyone who approaches them in their homes. They should ask for identification, he said. Florida Progress employees carry identification and city workers do not go on private property, he said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the St. Petersburg Police Department Communication Center at (727) 893-7780.
