Marine Corps League wants you as a member

The Marine Corps League, a voluntary veterans organization of former Marines and Navy Corpsmen, wants to increase its membership.

The league serves Brandon, Clearwater, St. Petersburg, Tampa and the North Suncoast through outreach programs such as Toys for Tots, supports returning troops and the VA, and provides honor guards for veterans who have died.

Italian-American women meet on third Tuesday

The Italian-American Women of Today - LIADO will hold a general membership meeting at 6 p.m. the third Tuesday of each month at Our Lady of Lourdes Community Center, 750 San Salvador Drive, Dunedin.

Membership is open to women of any age who have Italian ancestry and are interested in supporting Italian culture and heritage.

Retired greyhounds ready for adoption to be at store

The Bay Area Greyhound Adoptions, a volunteer organization that finds adoptive homes for retired racing greyhounds, will be showing greyhounds at the Clearwater PetsMart at Clearwater Mall, 2625 Gulf-to-Bay, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. the second and fourth Saturday of each month.

Dunedin flotilla presenting classes on boat safety

The Dunedin flotilla is presenting boat safety and seamanship programs. Classes run through November. Most insurance companies will give a discount on boat insurance after presenting a certificate of completion. Call 772-0021.

Youth swim team practicing through July

Clearwater Parks and Recreation is sponsoring a swim team for ages 15 and younger. Practices will be in two-week sessions Monday to Thursday through July 29 from 6 to 6:45 p.m. at Clearwater Beach Family Aquatic Center, 51 Bay Esplanade, 462-6020; Long Center, 1501 N Belcher Road, 793-2320; Morningside Recreation Complex, 2400 Harn Blvd., 507-4064; North Greenwood Recreation Complex, 900 N M.L. You can shape up with water fitness

Clearwater Parks and Recreation present aquacise through October. This instructor-led water fitness class emphasizes increasing endurance. Classes are at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at Clearwater Beach Family Aquatic Center, 51 Bay Esplanade, Clearwater.

HEP Thrift Store selling furniture, clothes, jewelry

Clearwater Penwomen seeking contest entries

The Clearwater branch of Penwomen calls on female writers to submit short stories, poetry, essays and journalism articles in a local contest. Each writer can submit unlimited entries. Entries should be typed, without names. Please make a cover sheet giving title or the first line of each entry, plus a name, address, phone number, fax and e-mail address.

All entries can be published or unpublished and remain the property of the author. Entry fees are $5 each for short stories (1,500 to 2,000 word limit), essays (1,000 word limit) and journalism (1,000 word limit); and $2 each for poetry, one poem per page. Italian-American Club offers dinner dances

CLEARWATER - The Italian-American Club of Greater Clearwater, 200 McMullen-Booth Road, has a pasta dinner and dancing every Tuesday. Dinner at the club begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by dancing until 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $6 for members and $8 for nonmembers.

The club puts on dinner-dances from 5:30 to 11 p.m. every other Saturday. Cost is $12 for members, $15 for nonmembers. The club is now accepting new members.

Worknet Pinellas to help place, train veterans

Worknet Pinellas will help place and train military veterans. All career fields are eligible, and training is done by the employer on site. Aquatic classes can help with arthritis, more

PALM HARBOR - Physiotherapy Associates, 35111 U.S. 19 N, Suite 100, offers aquatic classes for those with arthritis, fibromyalgia, osteoporosis and chronic back and neck pain.

The classes, approved by the Arthritis Foundation, are also appropriate for those with diabetes, postrehabilitation needs or weight loss requirements.

Classes are conducted as part of a nonprofit program. They take place in a heated indoor pool and offer range of motion, flexibility and strengthening exercises.

Palm Harbor Literacy Council seeks volunteers

PALM HARBOR - The Palm Harbor Literacy Council seeks volunteers to help adults, many of them recent arrivals to the United States, learn to read, write and speak better English.

The literacy council provides free one-on-one tutoring to new residents, many of them foreign-born college graduates now working in the United States.

The council has 103 certified tutors but needs 50 more volunteers to work with students on its waiting list.
