Road builder to pay for cleanup of sprayed cars

TAMPA - The contractor for the elevated portion of the Lee Roy Selmon Crosstown Expressway agreed on Wednesday to pick up the cleaning bill for cars sprayed by a mist as workers tested a protective sealant along the construction site.
Travelers have complained in recent weeks that their vehicles were left with paint spots speckled across their front bumpers and hoods, said Beth Leytham, spokeswoman for the Tampa-Hillsborough Expressway Authority. Contractors began in late June spraying different sealants on the elevated portion of the expressway under construction. Another round of spraying will take place tonight, Leytham said.
The sealants being tested will prevent mildew, she said.
PCL Civil Constructors, the contractor, has agreed to reimburse motorists up to $100 to have vehicles detailed. So far, the Expressway Authority has received about 50 complaints. Leytham said she doesn't expect the number to go much higher.
Owners of vehicles affected by the mist must file a complaint with the Expressway Authority by sending a photo of the vehicle showing the mist on the car, the date, time and direction of travel and a receipt for detailing for up to $100.
All complaints can be directed to Lori Buck through e-mail at lori_buck@urscorp.com or by U.S. mail to 1103 N 22nd St., Suite F, Tampa, 33605. Buck can be reached by phone at 813-241-8910.
