Woman to appeal sentence in tax cases

By Times Staff Writer
Published July 21, 2005

A Tarpon Springs woman charged with filing false income tax returns was sentenced last week to 46 months in prison and was ordered to pay $52,728 in restitution, according to federal court records.

Teresa J. Sullivan, 49, was indicted in January on charges of filing returns in which she falsely claimed her adult daughter and two grandchildren as dependents and improperly took the earned income tax credit for the two grandchildren. She also was charged with filing income tax returns for 11 people seeking false refunds ranging from $2,661 to $6,206 from 2000 to 2002. Together, prosecutors said, the false refunds totaled more than $80,000. U.S. District Judge Richard A. Lazzara sentenced her Friday. Though she entered a guilty plea in March, court records show she unsuccessfully tried to withdraw that plea earlier this month and this week filed a notice of appeal.
