U.S. wins pair of golds at swim meet

MONTREAL - Laura Wilkinson survived a final in which all of the contenders faltered and won the 10-meter platform title at the World Swimming Championships on Wednesday, giving the United States its second gold medal of the day.
Chip Peterson won the 5-kilometer open water swimming race for the first American gold.
Wilkinson, the 2000 Olympic platform champion, finished first with 564.87 points.
Canada, China and the United States were tied atop the medal standings with two golds each after four days.
TENNIS: Capriati to miss Open
Jennifer Capriati will miss the U.S. Open with a shoulder injury.
Major champions Serena and Venus Williams, Maria Sharapova, Lindsay Davenport, Justine Henin-Hardenne, Anastasia Myskina and reigning U.S. Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova head the women's field.
CINCINNATI WOMEN'S OPEN: Teenager Shahar Peer came back from a set down to upset sixth-seeded Ai Sugiyama 5-7, 7-6 (7-6), 6-4 in a rain-delayed match.
MERCEDES CUP: Rafael Nadal won his 30th straight match on clay, beating Hugo Armando, 6-1, 6-2 in the second round in Stuttgart, Germany.
PALERMO INTERNATIONAL: Defending champion Anabel Medina Garrigues defeated Conchita Martinez Granados 7-5, 6-2 to reach the quarterfinals in Palermo, Sicily.
PRIORITY TELECOM: Top-seeded Mariano Puerta defeated Janko Tipsarevic 6-2, 6-2 in the first round in Amersfoort, Netherlands.
RCA CHAMPIONSHIPS: Second-seeded Nicolas Kiefer reached the quarterfinals in Indianapolis with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Antony Dupuis.
SOCCER: Cup qualifier set
The United States plans to play its final World Cup qualifier at Foxboro, Mass., on Oct. 12 against Panama, according to the Web site of soccer's governing body.
The United States (4-1) is second with 12 points, one point behind Mexico (4-0-1), and resumes qualifying Aug. 17 against Trinidad and Tobago at East Hartford, Conn. The Americans play Mexico on Sept. 3 at Columbus, Ohio, before traveling to Guatemala on Sept. 7 and Costa Rica on Oct. 8.
RANKINGS: The U.S. moved up to sixth in the world, the highest position ever in FIFA's monthly list. The U.S., ranked 10th last month, moved past France, England, Portugal, and Spain.
NORDIC CUP: Olympic star Heather O'Reilly had two goals, leading the U.S. Under-21 women over Iceland 4-0 in the first round in Kristinehamn, Sweden.
MLS: Jamal Sutton scored in second-half stoppage time and the host Columbus Crew broke a six-game winless streak with a 1-0 win over the MetroStars. ... Rookie Scott Sealy scored his third goal in the past two games to help the host Kansas City Wizards forge a 1-1 tie with D.C. United. ... Brian Mullan and Mark Chung each scored to lead visiting San Jose past Colorado 2-1.

BOXING: Any rematch between undisputed middleweight champion Jermain Taylor and Bernard Hopkins will have to wait until at least December. Taylor's promoter, Lou DiBella, said the deep cut Taylor sustained from a head-butt in the fifth round of Saturday's bout will prevent him from any contact drills for 45 days. ... Lucia Rijker ruptured her left Achilles' tendon in a training session, forcing her fight against Christy Martin later this month to be called off. HORSE RACING: A jockey seriously injured when he was thrown from his mount and trampled by another horse was in guarded condition at a Rochester, N.Y., hospital. Omar Camejo broke three ribs and punctured a lung Tuesday at Finger Lakes Race Track in Farmington, N.Y., said his agent, Pedro Carrasquel. Camejo was thrown from One El of a Lady and trampled in the seventh race.
TRACK: Olympic silver medalist Hezekiel Sepeng has tested positive for the steroid norandrosterone. Sepeng, second in the 800 meters at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, faces a ban of up to two years if found guilty.
