BROOKSVILLE - Although most people aren't even thinking about autumn in late July, Brooksville City Hall Art Gallery coordinator Mary Alice Queiros finds the sultry summer months the perfect time to make preparations for the gallery's fall art exhibit.
"I love this time of year because there's not a huge rush of activity," Queiros said this week as she took a brief break from her work. "It's a good time to see an exhibit because you have plenty of opportunity to let it all sink in."
The gallery's fall show opens Monday with an array of works by six local and regional artists, most of whom have not exhibited in the municipal gallery before.
"It will be a very diverse show, with a number of mediums we haven't featured in a while," Queiros said.
She said the spring/summer exhibit was one of the gallery's most successful shows, attendance-wise.
"People come in and are amazed at how talented the artists are in their community," she said. "It's nice to see people supporting them."
Featured artists in the fall exhibit will include several Hernando County artists - Philip Kopickzko (oil and mixed media), Klaus Schuette (sculpture), Melissa Isaacs (mixed media) Kathleen Wilson (watercolor) and Walter Sprague (ink and watercolor) - plus St. Petersburg stained glass jewelry artist Leslie Bescher. In addition, the gallery will feature ongoing displays from the Hernando County Porcelain Artist Club, the Spring Hill Camera Club and the Suncoast Ship Model Society of Spring Hill.
Queiros, who collects Japanese art and clothing, will combine her collection of kimonos and byobu (linen room screens) with collections owned by Spring Hill artist Yoko Hodge for a special display in the second-floor gallery.
