ST. PETERSBURG - Kim Trombley knows being a City Council member isn't an easy job.
"I think the council members are very underappreciated," said Trombley, 49. "The work they do is really, really difficult."
But that didn't deter the longtime St. Petersburg resident from entering the race for the District 4 council seat currently held by Virginia Littrell, who is running for re-election.
Trombley is a political newcomer, though she is active in several civic organizations. She is a member of the Election Reform Coalition of Pinellas County, the Sierra Club, Democracy for America and the Florida Public Interest Research Group.
"Now what I want to do is really roll up my sleeves and work for the people of District 4," Trombley said. "They deserve someone who will do that."
District 4 is in the northeast section of St. Petersburg and includes parts of downtown, Old Northeast, Woodlawn, Crescent Lake, Crescent Heights and Allendale.
Trombley was born in Gainesville and moved to St. Petersburg to attend the University of South Florida, where she earned a degree in English literature.
After college, she owned Joyce's Newsstand in downtown St. Petersburg for a year before joining a software company in Clearwater.
In 1995, Trombley started her own company, Capricorn Event Sound, which provided amplifiers and speakers for various events. But a back strain from lugging heavy equipment forced her to close the business in 2001.
Since then, Trombley has been a part-time property manager. She also plays bass guitar in a blues group called the Hard Truth Band.
Many of her top priorities are related to the environment. For example, she would like to see St. Petersburg implement curbside recycling.
"I haven't decided whether the city should hold a referendum on the issue or if the City Council should just do it," Trombley said. "But one way or the other, it's something that needs to be discussed."
Trombley said she would encourage the Police Department to do more community policing. She said she wants to see more "sensible code enforcement."
Trombley has been married to her husband, Daniel, for 19 years. They live in Woodlawn.
Council members serve a four-year term and receive an annual salary of $24,758. A primary election will be Sept. 27, and the general election will be Nov. 8.
