School tax holiday begins

By Times Staff Writer
Published July 23, 2005

Unholster the credit cards and unwad the cash. The back-to-school sales tax holiday begins today.

Through July 31, sales tax won't be charged on lots of clothes, accessories, books and back-to-school supplies.

To be exempt from the tax, clothes, accessories or books must cost $50 or less, and school supplies must cost $10 or less.

Among the untaxed clothes and accessories are blouses, dresses, jeans, pants, shorts, shirts, skirts, sweaters and coats, Scout uniforms, slips and bras, ties and belts, hats, hosiery, pajamas, bathing suits, baby clothes, diapers and diaper bags, handbags and wallets, backpacks and book bags, hair barrettes, bows and ponytail holders.

Exempt school supplies are calculators, cellophane tape, colored pencils, compasses, composition books, blank CDs and floppies, crayons, erasers, glue, legal pads, notebooks, notebook filler paper, paste, pencils, pens, pen refills, poster paper, protractors, rulers and scissors.

For an even longer list of exempt items, go to the state Department of Revenue's Web site at taxlaw.state.fl.us/taxlawmenu.asp and click the "2005 Sales Tax Holiday" button.
