  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

July 22, 1949: Women seek jury duty

CLEARWATER - Women might not want to serve on juries elsewhere in Florida, but they do in Pinellas, says County Clerk William Crawford. Crawford has letters from 22 women seeking to serve as jurors.

They may do so after Aug. 1, and he is preparing the register now for their signatures. The county clerk is of the opinion that the women who have come forward are just the vanguard. After the first of next month, he thinks many others will follow.

County officials believe that women will not actually be called until after the first of next year. The jury lists are made up for a considerable period in advance. And there are believed to be enough names already on the list to fill the requirements of the court for the rest of this year, including the fall term of circuit court.

The matter of women serving on juries has been discussed at County Commission meetings several times so that all plans could be made for registering them as soon as the law allows. Women must volunteer to serve before they can be called. Men who are registered voters are subject to jury call at any time.

July 23, 1936: County welcomes Cuban Boy Scouts

City and Scout officials from all sections of Pinellas County were gathered this afternoon at Camp Owen Brorein to extend a welcome honoring Cuban Boy Scouts and officials who arrived last night to be guests of the Pinellas organization.

A wide variety of entertainment has been planned for the visiting delegation. The welcoming committee today was made up of men from Clearwater, Tarpon Springs and St. Petersburg.

Speaker during the ceremonies was Rev. J.P. Jockinsen, new pastor of the local Congregational church. He spoke on his experiences with natives in the Philippines. The local Cub organization left early this afternoon to present a special program at the camp.

The Cuban Scouts are led by Arturo Boca Arus, Scout executive for the Havana district.

July 23, 1936: Welfare leader addresses clubs

CLEARWATER - James Donn of Miami, chairman of the Florida committee on social welfare, told yesterday's noon luncheon of the Lions and Rotarians that his committee is urging the adoption of an amendment to the Florida constitution to help provide pensions for the aged and needy blind, help for the needy and care for orphans.

In the event the amendment should be voted on favorably, the state will qualify for a general grant of between $3- and $4-million from the federal government. This sum would then have to be matched by the state and counties.

July 20, 1949: Guernsey cattle sale set for Nov. 3

LARGO - The 11th annual Florida Guernsey Cattle Club sale will be held at the fairgrounds in Largo on Nov. 3, according to Pinellas County agricultural department officials.

The auctions have considerably increased the number of purebred cattle in Pinellas County and the state at large. They also have had a big part in boosting the cattle industry in the opinion of agricultural leaders. Buyers from throughout the South attend the sale, which is preceded by a dinner for the cattlemen.

In past years, the sales have been held in October, but it will be a little later this year so as to give more time to prepare for the event.

During the summer, County Agent J.H. Logan and members of the Florida Guernsey Cattle Club committee will visit several states and select some of the stock to be offered.
