Construction starts on 'other' Florida Trump complex

By JEFF HARRINGTON
Published July 25, 2005

Construction has begun on Donald Trump's new namesake tower in Florida.

No, not that one. Trump Tower Tampa is still more than a month away from any groundbreaking ceremony, possibly months.

We're talking about Trump International Hotel & Tower in Fort Lauderdale, a 300-unit condominium/hotel complex overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

The 24-story, $200-million tower on the other side of Florida is being built in partnership with Bayrock Group and New York developer Roy Stillman. It's supposed to be completed in spring 2007. More than 80 percent of units reportedly have been reserved.

As for the real estate mogul's condo tower in downtown Tampa, 100 percent of the 190 units have been reserved. But developers are waiting to get clearance from city planners before they can start building. Until then, they're limited to site preparation.

David Hooks, a spokesman for the developers, said there's also the matter of scheduling for dignitaries who might attend. The Donald swept in for the project's sales launch in February in a VIP event for more than 600 invitees.

The groundbreaking event "won't be the kind of scale that the sales launch was; that's just not necessary," Hooks said. "But it'll be nice."
