TAMPA - Peter Castelli, a subcontractor who helped build the Spinal Cord Injury Center at James A. Haley VA Medical Center, has been charged with participating in a kickback scheme that he says he helped expose.
Castelli, 60, was not arrested but was charged. If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison.
According to federal court records, Castelli is scheduled to plead guilty Aug. 10 to an allegation that he provided $63,000 in kickbacks to "an employee of Corporation "A."
However, Castelli told the Times he is not certain he will plead guilty.
"I'm considering rescinding my plea offer, because morally I didn't do anything wrong," Castelli said.
Castelli says he gave federal prosecutors information to investigate a scheme involving Dawson Building Contractors Inc. of Alabama. Dawson Building Contractors had the contract to build the 70-bed, $21.7-million spinal cord center, which opened in February 2002.
