Clean Norton, McAfee results indicate system is safe

Q. I use the Microsoft 2000 Professional computer system to search the Internet through my Internet service provider (CompuServe). Search engines I utilize are Google, Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox. To protect the system, I have installed and keep updated AVG, Ad-aware, Microsoft Antispyware, Spybot, X-cleaner and Secret Maker. I also keep current with the Windows Update. While running AVG, the search result indicated I may have an infection in C:\Winnit\System 32 files: Kernel32dll, User32dll, Ntoskrnl.exe. I ran all the protection systems installed above and included McAfee and Norton to determine and identify any infection that would cause the problem with negative results. Is there a cure for this problem or should I ignore it?

A. Since McAfee and Norton say everything is okay (assuming they're the latest updated versions), I would say you're safe. But I also recommend that you run the Windows 2000 System File Checker (SFC). Go to support.microsoft.com and search for kb222471, and read and follow the instructions of the returned knowledge base article. I also recommend that you pare down the three antivirus programs you seem to be running to whichever your favorite is. Aside from this possibly causing some confusing results, it is a significant performance load on your system to be running all three. Out of the three, I would recommend Norton.

Explorer add-on could be cause of error

Q. I have been getting this window (Windows XP Home) popup: "IExplorer-Application Error - The instruction at "0x00b15f6c' referenced memory at "0x0015f6c.' The memory could not be read. Click OK to terminate the program." I click OK each time and things seem to work okay. Do I have a problem? If so, how do I fix it?

A. This could be almost anything - but I'm going to take a wild guess and say it may have something to do with an Internet Explorer add-on. To check this: From Internet Explorer, click Tools, Manage Add-Ons. You should see at least a couple of add-ons, maybe Norton Antivirus and perhaps one for Adobe Acrobat or Spybot. Leave any antivirus add-ons enabled but try disabling some of the others (click on the add-on and then click Disable down below in the Settings box. You will be able to re-enable them later if needed. I always recommend not adding Toolbar add-ons (Google, for example). They are notorious troublemakers.

MusicMatch application may need to be reinstalled

Q. Whenever I log on (Windows XP), this message appears: "This application has failed to start because TrackUtils.dll was not found. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem." What does this mean? Is this a serious problem?

A. TrackUtils.dll is part of MusicMatch, which I think is from Yahoo. You can try uninstalling it from Control Panel Add/Remove Programs. If you want to reinstall it, go to www.musicmatch.com and download a new copy.

Update Spybot, run Cool Web Search Shredder

Q. When I run Spybot, it stops at 6580/24879:CoolWWWSearch. Any suggestions?

A. I'm not sure what's going on with Spybot. Make sure you have the latest version with the latest updates (www.safer-networking.org) I also recommend going to www.computercops.biz search for CWShredder.exe (Cool Web Search Shredder). Download and run this program and follow the instructions.
