Extra Help for seniors who needs assistance

By Times Staff Writer
Published July 26, 2005

The Department of Elder Affairs/SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders) program has formed a statewide partnership with the Social Security Administration to help low-income seniors with the new Medicare Prescription Drug Plan also known as Medicare Part D.

SSA will administer the "Extra Help" program, which provides financial assistance to low-income beneficiaries enrolled in Part D who meet income and asset requirements. SHINE counselors will provide hands-on assistance to applicants requesting help.

People with questions about Part D and the Extra Help application can call the Elder Helpline at 1-800-963-5337 or Social Security at (800) 772-1213.
