Although Red Tide has affected many Tarpon Springs flats, seeking healthy waters has led to great tarpon action.
Juvenile silverkings have been found in backwater spots where the salinity is too low to be affected by the toxic algae bloom.
Schools of 5- to 20-pound tarpon have been spotted rolling on the surface. Casting free-lined sardines on light tackle produces fast action. After several fish are caught, the tarpon seem to smarten up and move on.
Fishing has been best in early morning. There also is a good bite between sunset and nightfall. The heat and afternoon thunderstorms have slowed things considerably, so fish from sunrise to 11 a.m. for best results.
Small tarpon have delicate mouths and should be handled with care. Never use a lip gripping device such as a BogaGrip to hold one; this can create holes in the fish's mouth or break its jaw. Scientists say these fish can live 20 years or more so careful handling will contribute to a healthy tarpon fishery.
