New attorney gains delay in Tate's probation hearing

FORT LAUDERDALE - Murder convict Lionel Tate, with a new court-appointed lawyer at his side, was given more time Monday to prepare for a probation hearing that could land him in prison for life for a robbery.
Circuit Judge Joel Lazarus delayed the hearing from Aug. 8 to Oct. 17 at the request of H. Dohn Williams, a public defender the judge appointed for Tate after the defendant's longtime attorney, Jim Lewis, withdrew this month.
Tate, 18, has pleaded not guilty in the May 23 armed robbery of a Domino's Pizza delivery man. He faces a potential life sentence because he is on probation as part of a plea agreement in the 1999 killing of 6-year-old family friend Tiffany Eunick, when Tate was 12.
Williams said after Monday's brief hearing that he has met with Tate and begun reviewing evidence in the robbery case. Tate remains jailed without bail.
