TAMPA - A convicted sexual predator who failed to register with local authorities is being sought by the Hillsborough Sheriff's Office.

A warrant was issued Wednesday for the arrest of Michael Wayne Purcell, 21, who was released from the county jail on July 17 and then absconded from probation, the Sheriff's Office said.

Purcell was sentenced on July 15 to five years of probation stemming from a charge of sexual battery on a juvenile under the age of 12 in 2001, according to state records.

Purcell is known to frequent the Tropical Acres and Gibsonton areas, the Sheriff's Office said.
