Deputies will target road violations Friday

The one-day countywide effort, called "Operation Gotcha," is intended to keep motorists safe.

Watch out for the blue lights Friday. Pasco County deputies will be cracking down on traffic law violators.

It's a one-day, countywide operation aimed at reminding drivers to keep in line and make roads safer, deputies say.

Officially it's "Operation Gotcha," said Sgt. Eric Anthes, but he would rather drivers understand deputies mean "gotcha home safe."

Patrol deputies will be instructed to spend any unallocated time while on duty looking out for scofflaws on the road.

The primary focus, Anthes said, is on drunken driving.

"We're going to be out there," Anthes said.

Traffic fatalities are ahead of this time last year in the county, Anthes said. He hopes a day of increased law enforcement visibility will make an impression on drivers.

"They're making cars safer," Anthes said. "Now we need to make drivers safer."

Emily Vasquez can be reached in west Pasco at 869-6232 or toll-free at 1-800-333-7505, ext. 6232. Her e-mail address is evasquez@sptimes.com
