Illegal traffic stop brings charge of impersonation

PORT RICHEY - A Palm Harbor man was arrested Tuesday on a charge of impersonating a law enforcement officer, a felony, after he illegally conducted a traffic stop, deputies said.

Driving a Chevy Malibu equipped with white and red strobe lights, Joseph Anthony McCormic, 27, a felon already convicted for offenses including theft, larceny, check fraud and burglary, activated the lights and pulled another driver over on Woodridge Court in June, deputies said.

When McCormic, who wasn't wearing a uniform, approached the other vehicle, the driver asked him for identification. McCormic could produce only an ID for either the Pasco County Disaster Team or Rescue Team, deputies said. Still, McCormic told the driver he had the same powers as a deputy.

McCormic, then spoke to the driver about speeding in the area, deputies said. The driver was later able to help deputies identify him.

McCormic of 3367 Crystal Court E was released on $2,500 bail Tuesday.
