Woman accused of firing gun in yard, near children

NEW PORT RICHEY - A 67-year-old woman was arrested Tuesday on charges of improperly displaying a firearm after she fired a handgun outside her home as children played nearby, deputies said.

Lois Nadine Yeomans of 12910 Dora Ave. apparently was angered by the children "banging a ball against the fence" near her home, a sheriff's report said. She fired the gun and swore at the children, deputies said, until her husband pulled her back inside the house.

Witnesses said Yeomans did not fire or point the gun directly toward the children, deputies said.

Yeomans was later detained by deputies responding to the incident when they saw her driving a Chevy Astro van near Ellis Avenue and Morena Street.

She failed to pass sobriety tests, deputies said, and was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence. A breath test revealed her blood alcohol level at 0.081, just above the 0.08 level at which state law presumes impairment.

When deputies questioned Yeomans about the shots fired outside her residence, Yeomans denied leaving her home, the report said.

She was released on $1,000 bail Tuesday.
