Schmidt: Hope dying for Rose

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. - Pete Rose may show up this weekend to sell his autograph.
But it seems less likely he will ever return to be inducted.
Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt, a friend and former teammate, said Friday Rose's hope for reinstatement by commissioner Bud Selig is "dead for all practical concerns."
"Pete has no communication with the commissioner's office, so it's been allowed to die on the vine," Schmidt said. "I don't think it's the right way to have handled it, but it works for baseball, it looks like.
"There's a lot of sad elements. ... It's sad the way it was handled. It was sad that Pete bet on baseball. It was sad that Pete thought he could get away with it. It was sad the way he confessed (in a book) so to speak, or at least the way it was perceived that he admitted to it was sad. And it's sad now the way baseball is handling it. It truly could be put to bed one way or another and I think we all sort of wish that would happen for all the parties."
