LARGO - Jack Stein, who finished fifth at the AAU Diving National Championships in Thursday's 1-meter springboard final at Southwest Aquatic Complex, was a bit better Friday.
Stein, of the West Florida Lightning Aquatics of Largo, finished first in one heat and second overall in the 11-and-under 3-meter springboard.
Events with more than 16 competitors are split into two heats, red and blue.
Stein finished second in the preliminaries with 162.95 points. In the final, he was first on the blue board after the required dives, a front double and inward 11/2. But three divers on the red board were better, leaving him fourth.
On a front double, Stein received all sevens then scored a 61/2 on his inward, a personal best. He scored the most points on optional dives, leaving him second overall behind Bryce Klein of Texas.
Emily Howard of New Jersey won the girls 12- to 13-year-old 10-meter platform with 197.90 points. David Bonuchi of Missouri won the boys 12- to 13-year-old platform by 50 points. Carly Alexander of Plantation won the 11-and-under 3-meter a day after finishing third in the 1-meter.
